Modulus Graphite has just announced a new RevOLite version of its Funk Unlimited model. Designed by master builder Joe Perman, the Funk Unlimited RevOLite carries the same shape while using carbon fibre reinforced construction that increases rigidity and reduces the weight considerably.

These guys started in 1978 and unfortunately went bust in 2013, yet rose from the ashes the following year when the company found new ownership. Modulus is once again building boutique basses in the USA. This new 2017 model was a closely guarded secret up until the NAMM Show last week, but now we finally have the full details.

Flyweight

Carbon fibre is used in guitar and bass construction to achieve specific advantages, most noticeably to add strength and rigidity compared to traditional wood construction. It is also far lighter and ridiculously strong as well. I myself owned a Fly Deluxe for a number of years and even though it was light as hell, super thin and looked almost anaemic compared to my old Les Paul, it was way stronger than that old ’50s mahogany design any day of the week.

Carbon clad

The RevOLite’s body is built using carbon fibre-reinforced alder, ash, or basswood while the 22 fret, 34″ neck features a new carbon fibre RevOLite shell. This adds serious strength to an instrument and allows you to shave pounds off of the weight by doing so in a similar way to the Parker Fly mentioned above.

These unusual build techniques also extend to the fingerboard, which is made from a phenolic resin. This isn’t the first foray by Modulus into this type of bass. In fact, I’m pretty sure Flea from the Red Hot Chilli Peppers, was playing something very similar to this (he had a signature ‘Modulus Flea Bass Funk Unlimited’) a few years back…

Modulus has fitted the RevOLite with a Lane Poor Legacy MM pickup matched to an Aguilar OBP-1 preamp. Hardware includes a Hipshot B-Style bridge and Gotoh GB350 tuners, so tuning should be rock solid and this hardware will last a lifetime.

The RevOLite was presented at Summer NAMM and should be available from dealers soon. It’s fairly pricy, but then again it is something special. If you like Modulus basses then you’ll be aware this is well within their normal price range. Modulus often offer a range of custom options, and I expect this model will be no exception. That means that the price below is a base price. And because Moduls is a boutique maker, you’ll probably have to wait after ordering before you receive your bass.

RRP – starting from USD 4,599
