Catalinbread Belle Epoch Deluxe, an Echoplex recreation, nears release

Catalinbread‘s new Belle Epoch Deluxe pedal seeks to recreate the retro delay tones of the legendary original Echoplex delays of yesteryear. This recreation is a bold move and puts the company in direct competition with Strymon, a company with quite a reputation as a builder of some pretty great vintage-style delay pedals. 

Echoplex

Catalinbread has recreated the original circuit of the EP-3, using the original schematic of the Echoplex EP-3 with the same power supply, preamp, record , playback , a mixer stage and feedback loop.

This recreation will hopefully be a faithful as possible. On first listen to the demo video below, the Belle Epoch Deluxe does sound pretty much exactly like an original Echoplex to my ear.

Expression pedal

As on the original, you can control the time with an external expression pedal attached rather than a tap tempo footswitch, which is also faithful to the original design. Designer Howard G has been keeping everyone up to date on the pedal’s progress via his Instagram page for a while now, and it looks like it is finally ready for release. The company has also had a lot of coverage via their Facebook page as well, though the pedal is not currently listed on their main site.

They have released the official price, though, albeit through the comments section on the YouTube video below. So we do know it is at a similar price point to Strymon and their delay pedals.

The company has been getting pretty hyped up by this new recreation of an EP-3 and so there are a few blog style entries over at Catalinbread’s main site, mainly concerning what expression pedals you can use with the Belle Epoch Deluxe. But no official specifications at the time of writing this article. We’ll keep you updated.
