Peterson StroboClip HD: A TC PolyTune Clip killer?
Peterson’s new StroboClip HD manages to squeeze an insane amount of functionality into the clip-on headstock tuner format. How can they fit so much into so little?
This newly updated headstock tuner comes with a ridiculously high resolution tuning capability with a 0.1% accuracy and a full-on strobe-style tuner. The high-resolution display accounts for the StroboClip HD’s accuracy. Peterson, of course, have a long history in making tuners relied on by professional touring musicians since the ’70s.
What impressed me about this model is the fact it carries 50 preset tunings onboard, some of them ‘sweetened’ to accommodate any stringed instrument you can through at it. Not only have they managed to press all of this into a tiny format, but they have somehow still found room for a micro-USB port, which means you can use the Peterson tuning software to build your own custom tunings, then upload them to the StroboClip HD; firmware updates for the tuner are also possible. Phew.
The tuner has three joints for movement and so you should be able to get it at a comfortable viewing angle on any instrument, which again can be an issue with cheaper models.
TC PolyTune killer?
I was impressed by my TC PolyTune Clip up till now, but this tuner goes way beyond what that can do.
Okay, we may not all need such ultra-powerful tuning capabilities for our guitar rigs. But some people do, especially touring musicians and session players. I was mightily impressed with the visibility of the screen, even in direct sunlight. This is also a huge plus when compared to many clip-on headstock tuners on the market, which are often impossible to see in certain lighting conditions.
Price-wise, it’s been placed in a similar price category alongside the TC PolyTune Clip. That makes it well priced for such a feature-packed bit of kit. I’m not usually impressed by tuners, but this one has certainly caught my attention.
