Suhr Finish Over Finish Classic Antique guitars – Oh dear…
Suhr’s new Finish Over Finish Classic Antique guitars is a limited run of their Strat Style model, that comes in a relic style finish. These artificially worn guitars will, of course, divide opinion, but will they offer us anything new?
Finish Over Finish
Of course, this idea is nothing new and in fact, Fender and many other makers, including the recent Gibson ‘Painted Over’ effort, has had a go at this look over the years. I’m going to say now for the record that I personally think they look daft (and that is the polite version of my opinion). But of course, you may well love the ‘road warrior’ look of this style of finish.
Each of the guitars has a thin nitrocellulose finish over a three-tone sunburst base coat, this is then aged to expose the two finishes and give it that worn in look. I think it looks so fake, that it’s just bloody stupid. The pattern is the same across all the guitars and so when you see them all on the Suhr website, they do look ridiculous.
Suhr Finish Over Finish Classic Antique – Why?
Pickups and hardware
All the guitars feature alder bodies with maple necks and a rosewood fingerboard, with both HSS or SSS pickup configurations available for each model.
They come in five finishes including, Black, Candy Apple Red, Fiesta Orange, Olympic White and Surf Green. All of which are then sprayed over that three tone Sunburst base coat.
Hardware wise you get ML Standard single coil pickups with an option of SSV humbucker on the HSS model and Gotoh 510 vibrato systems.
Again, I am not a fan of this look and feel it looks like a poor relic job at best. If anything I think that they have just ruined 200 guitars with this Finish Over Finish run and so I really cannot see the appeal.
RRP – USD 2,845 limited to 200 guitars worldwide (thankfully)
