Agent of Change campaign backed by almost 1,000 online supporters
The charity’s campaign to enshrine Agent of Change in UK law will be brought to Parliament on January 10
Music Venue Trust has set up an outreach campaign online to spread the message of its Agent of Change campaign, gaining almost double the support than initially hoped.
The charity has gained 992 supporters on its Thunderclap page supporting the proposed law amendment, almost double that of its initial target of 500.
John Spellar MP, who outlined his plans at the charity’s Venues Day 2017 in October, will propose a Ten Minute Bill to make a person or business responsible for managing the impact of a change that they implement on January 10 in the House of Commons.
This not only means that an apartment block to be built near an established live music venue would have to pay for soundproofing, but a music venue that buys a new PA would also be expected to carry out tests to make sure its noise emissions don’t increase.
The campaign has already drawn cross-party support from more 70 MPs and peers.
At the moment, UK law says that whoever is making the noise is always responsible for that noise. It is therefore hoped that enshrining Agent of Change into UK law will prevent live music venues being priced out of business and closing down, as new property developments would have to pay up for any complaints made by residents about noise from the venue.
