Hidersine launches limited edition Reserve cellos range

Barnes and Mullins has announced the addition of a range of limited edition cellos to its Hidersine ‘Reserve’ series.
B&M says that each new cello has been modelled on famous designs from four of the most respected and skilled master luthiers throughout orchestral instrument making history – Domenico Montagnana, Giovanni Battista Rogeri, Alessandro Gagliano and Giovanni Battista Guadagnini.
The Reserve Montagnana ‘Sleeping Beauty’ offers a representation of Domenico Montagnana’s ‘Sleeping Beauty’ cello (1739). It features golden-orange body wood in a broad pattern and particularly upright f-holes for a full and powerful tone in the style of the stunning original. Montagnana’s original is widely regarded to represent his very best work in the Venetian school throughout the 18th century.
Owned by composer and musician Niccolo Paganini (who famously pawned it to pay off a gambling debt!) Giovanni Battista Rogeri’s 1717 is the inspiration behind the Hidersine Reserve ‘Rogeri’ 1717 cello. Noted for combining a certain artistic neatness with elongated f-holes and c-bouts synonymous with the Brescian school in his cello designs, the Hidersine model stays affectionately true to this style.
Arguably the most striking inclusion with its beautifully figured, strongly flamed back and deep varnished top wood is the Reserve ‘Gagliano’ 1704. This model is based on the design of the 1704 cello from the patriarch of the Neapolitan school and forerunner of the prolific violin-making Gagliano family.
Notable for its compact size, the Reserve Guadagnini ‘Simpson’ is modelled on Giovanni Battista Guadagnini’s 1777 cello of the same name. Previously owned by H.P. Simpson and now played by esteemed British classical cellist and Royal College of Music London Natalie Clein, it has proved to be a popular choice among professional cellists.
B&M adds that all Hidersine Reserve instruments are hand-crafted, one-off models built by luthiers working in the Hidersine partner workshop in Shanghai: ‘The new limited edition models are no exception, using select aged tonewoods, high quality fittings and accessories, they represent both superior quality and remarkable value. All four models are available as either Hidersine WC100 or WC400 speciality versions.’
Barnes and Mullins would like to welcome viewings of these unique and special cellos at its head offices in Oswestry, Shropshire. Enquires can also be made via the company’s area sales managers.
