BandLab unveils Link, 3 cheap, compact on-the-go audio interfaces
BandLab is an online platform for collaborative music making that’s now making an interesting foray into the audio interface market. According to UK audio mag Sound On Sound, the Singapore-based company is launching three no-frills audio in/out boxes, designed for “plug in and go” operation with both computers and smartphones. These are the BandLab Link Analog, BandLab Link Digital, and BandLab Link Digital Duo. Here’s the breakdown.
The BL Link Analog is a single-input interface with a single XLR/instrument combined input, gain control, a stereo headphone out, a stereo line out, and a stereo aux. The outputs are mini-jack. Together with the interface’s diminutive size, this makes for a portable solution for jamming and recording on-the-go, with a pair of headphones.
The BL Link Digital and BL Link Digital Duo are versions of the same interface with single and dual inputs (combined XLR/instrument), respectively. They get the addition of phantom power and a master monitor out level control for a bit more studio functionality.
Overall, though, these are very minimalistic interfaces, clearly designed for impromptu work outside the studio – like jamming. Their balanced weight and “proprietary” rubber feet add to the impression – these interfaces probably won’t slip off a coffee or hotel table. Moreover, the available inputs are outputs are enough to hook up to headphones, portable speakers, or even mixers if you happen to carry the right cables.
The simplest interface of the three starts at just $40, which is extremely affordable for an audio interface capable of musical recordings. The trio sounds like a decent, low-cost alternative to products by IK Multimedia, such as the Italian company’s iRig series. BandLab’s machines are certainly going to bring more people into this whole music recording and production thing, which is always great. They might also enable more musicians to enjoy the instrumental capabilities of their smartphones while on the go!
