Elektron Digitakt Sampling and Sequencing box is here
We saw it at NAMM, we played with it at Superbooth, but finally, Elektron has released the Digitakt! If you haven’t been keeping up the Digitakt is an 8-track drum machine, sampler and sequencer, in a box, ready to go.
It doesn’t strike me as a great looking box, it has the vibe of a large format calculator. “Compact and rugged” is what they’ve gone for (and achieved) and maybe at the expense of a bit of design elegance. But it does have a rather formidable feature set. It’s a beat making, drum machine, computerised, sampling, sequencing, overbridging box of groove – what’s not to like about that?
It comes loaded with over 400 factory samples covering drum kits, synth shots and stabs, pads, noises and oscillator cycles. So you don’t have to get into sampling your own sounds straight away – there’s plenty of room to just play.
You can sequence your samples over 8 tracks, and also run up to 8 MIDI tracks as well. Each track has a multi-mode filter, and overdrive effect and an LFO. Delay and reverb are available as send effects.
The workflow is very much designed for sampling and then sequencing the samples. The video below shows just how easy it is to take sound in, trim and slap it into a track – all with a few button presses. There’s 64MB of sample memory for your live samples and over 1GB of drive storage. The little screen is a bit of a throwback to Emu samplers of old. Not sure that’s a good thing, but watching the video it appears to be well designed and thought out. Rather than being a frustrating place it seems to be quite a smooth and helpful part of the workflow. Nice one.
If playing with the box isn’t enough then you can wire it straight in to your DAW. It uses a dedicated VST plug-in interface and uses the Digitakt as an audio interface. You can then stream the internal tracks directly into your DAW. The plug-in gives you a full GUI access to all the parameters so if the little screen is driving you mad then Overbridge is the remedy.
The Elektron Digitakt is available now for £659. More information can be found on the Elektron website.
