“My guitar sounds great… they’re incapable of singing in key”: Brent Hinds blasts Mastodon again, claims he was “kicked out” for “embarrassing” the band

Brent Hinds clearly isn’t done airing his grievances. Months after calling Mastodon a “shit band with horrible humans”, the guitarist has now taken aim at his former bandmates for being “incapable of singing in key”.
The feud follows Hinds’ shock departure from Mastodon in March – the first lineup change in the band’s history – announced just days before they were due to hit the stage at Tool’s Tool in the Sand festival in the Dominican Republic. At the time, Mastodon issued a joint statement framing the exit as mutual, saying they wished Hinds “nothing but success and happiness” going forward.
But Hinds’ public comments since then have painted a far less amicable picture.

In his latest tirade, the guitarist commented on an Instagram video of a 2012 performance of Crack the Skye, which spotlighted his guitar work.
“My guitar sounds great, but Troy [Sanders, bassist and vocalist] and prawn [supposedly Brann Dailor, drummer and vocalist] sound absolutely horrible,” Hinds writes. “They are way out of key, embarrassing, and they kicked me out of the band for embarrassing them for being who I am. But what about who they are?”
“They are two people that can’t sing…together live or anywhere else in the world,” he goes on. “Everything they try to sing in the studio is manipulated by autotune because they’re incapable of singing in key. Fuck these guys, only I know who they really are.”
Besides ridiculing his bandmates’ live vocals, the guitarist also blasted their personalities, saying, “They are the biggest fans of themselves. I’ve never seen anyone in my life look in the mirror more than Troy Sanders. He thinks he’s God’s gift to anything. I’ve never met three people that were so full of themselves. It’s disgusting.”
Hinds’ latest comments will no doubt intensify speculation over the true cause of his split from the band he co-founded in 2000. And if his recent history is any indication, this is unlikely to be the last we hear from him on the matter.
