PRS celebrates 40 years with the McCarty SC56 Limited Edition: “We started with our take on a classic late ‘50s singlecut body”
PRS has unveiled the 40th Anniversary McCarty SC56 Limited Edition, a single-cutaway model that’s both “a tribute to tradition and a modern performer’s dream”.
Limited to just 400 pieces worldwide, the SC56 captures the essence of a golden era of electric guitar design, while delivering the playability and reliability that modern musicians demand.

Anchored by a maple top and a “slightly thicker” mahogany back, the guitar sports a 24.594” scale length Pattern Vintage mahogany neck and a 22-fret rosewood fingerboard with a PRS two-piece bridge “to promote its musical sustain”.
The heart of the 40th Anniversary McCarty SC56 lies in its pickups: a pair of PRS McCarty III pickups, designed to deliver “warm, clear tone with exceptional note separation and dynamics”. Controls come by way of two Tone and two Volume knobs, complete with a 3-way toggle on the guitar’s upper bout.
To offset the typical heft of a single-cut, PRS employed a weight-relief design that trims around two-thirds of a pound while preserving key contact points between the guitar’s top and back. This maintains tonal integrity and avoids the “hollow” sound those cavities can have.
Additional appointments include vintage-styled Phase III non-locking tuners with wing buttons, “old school” birds inlays, fretboard binding, a 40th Anniversary SC56 truss rod cover and a high-gloss nitrocellulose finish.
“The SC56, signifying Singlecut and 1956, model is our most recent tribute to my late mentor Ted McCarty and his impact on the guitar industry,” says PRS founder Paul Reed Smith. “We started with our take on a classic late ‘50s singlecut body. 1956 marks the year that Ted first had guitars made with his newly coined ‘humbucker’ pickups. It also happens to be the year I was born.”
“Bringing vintage design into the modern era, we loaded this model with our McCarty III pickups, meticulously designed to deliver warm, clear, vintage tone with exceptional note separation and dynamics.”
Priced at $4950, the 40th Anniversary McCarty SC56 Limited Edition is available in three finishes: McCarty Sunburst, Faded Blue Jean and Translucent Black.
