“He picked up my guitar, which made me mad at first”: Dave Mustaine on the time he befriended a Megadeth fan who shredded a Rust in Peace classic

Ever wonder what it takes to befriend one of your guitar heroes? Well, playing their songs in front of them really well might just do the trick.
Megadeth mastermind Dave Mustaine recently detailed a fan encounter that kickstarted a “25-year friendship” after he was impressed so much with his skills.

Speaking with Ultimate Classic Rock, Mustaine says: “There was only one time ever that a fan showed me one of my songs. He played it the same way I played it. But it was not in the premise of somebody showing me an easier way to play my songs. He had said he knew one of my songs and I said, ‘No, you don’t.’ It was the beginning of Lucretia, which is very difficult.”
“He goes, ‘Yeah, I do.’ He picked up my guitar, which made me mad in the first place, and then he played Lucretia. I went, ‘Damn, he’s got it.’ That began a 25-year friendship, and he’s still working with me today.”
It’s a relationship that doesn’t come by often for the guitarist, who admits he’s not one for mixing friendship with business: “You never know how these business things turn into friendships,” says Mustaine. “I don’t like friendships that turn into business. That never works. When it’s a business that turns into friendship, even that is risky. But yeah, we’ve been together now for 25 years. Probably more.”

Elsewhere, Mustaine has opened up on the negativity he felt from strangers after being fired from Metallica in 1983.
“Once we broke up with James [Hetfield] and Lars [Ulrich] and we went our separate ways, it was really weird with all the animosity from people I didn’t even know,” he said.
The Megadeth leader also discussed the band’s many lineup changes over the decades, saying they all happened for a “legitimate reason” even if the decisions might have seemed “callous” at the time.
