“I was s**tting myself the entire time”: Yungblud recalls performing with Steve Jones’ Sex Pistols Les Paul Custom

Ever wonder what it’s like to perform using the same guitar once owned and played by your childhood idol? As Yungblud would have you know, it feels “fucking mental”, to say the least.
The 27-year-old star recently took to stage in Paris to perform his 2018 hit I Love You, Will You Marry Me using Steve Jones’ famed 1974 Gibson Les Paul Custom.
“I was literally sat backstage playing it through a Twin Reverb and it sounded exactly like [Sex Pistols classic] Pretty Vacant,” says Yungblud [via Total Guitar], who counts the Pistols, The Clash, and The Damned among his favourite old-school punk bands.

“Hearing Johnny Rotten with Steve Jones, Joe Strummer, and Captain Sensible was mind-blowing for me. I remember being hit in the face by their music around the age of seven.”
“Being able to shut my eyes and play Pistols riffs, and have it sound exactly like the record without three hours of fine-tuning on pedals or a laptop was fucking mental,” he adds. “Straight in, boom, go! And that guitar is heavy as fuck, too heavy for me to play, to be honest. It’s a proper ’70s Les Paul in that sense.”
The musician also shares how nerve-wrecking it was performing with the guitar, given its storied history and price tag – the instrument fetched an impressive $390,000 at a recent auction.
“I was off my fucking tits playing it, to be honest,” he says. “I used it for one song but was shitting myself the entire time. I didn’t want to break it, but on the other hand, if I did, that would have ended up being part of its story!”

Earlier this year, Yungblud released his first-ever signature guitar, a white-finished Epiphone SG based on his very own Gibson SG Junior.
