“I would be recording with Led Zeppelin and suddenly get a sore throat”: The reason Robert Plant used to pull a sickie for Led Zeppelin recording sessions

Most of us are guilty of pretending to be sick to get out of work at least once in our lives, and Robert Plant is no different.
According to the Led Zeppelin vocalist, he would pretend to feel ill while recording with the band so he could watch his favourite football team play – Wolverhampton Wanderers.

In an interview for FourFourTwo, Plant recalls, “I was always with it – the whole idea of coming to Molineux on a cloudy, misty Tuesday night, when the South Bank was just an absolute miasma of cigarette smoke with a fantastic atmosphere and chant.
“It was such a far cry from what l’d been involved with on tour. I could get lost in the euphoria, the pain, or the bliss. On a Tuesday afternoon, I would be recording with Led Zeppelin and suddenly get a sore throat to be away for a night game.”
Just as football allowed him to get out of work, it also helped him to get back involved in it too. In 1975, Plant was involved in a car accident, and used a wheelchair for several months. “I had to learn to walk and use my right foot again. It stopped a lot of Led Zeppelin activity, though we did write and cut a new record [Presence],” he says.
At the time, Plant reached out to Sammy Chung, the club’s assistant manager at that time, and asked if he would help him to walk again. He soon after started physiotherapy and went to the gym with players of that time. Over the years, the football club has also played a number of Led Zeppelin tracks at their games – including Whole Lotta Love and Kashmir.
“I’m very proud of that, except they’ve edited the thing wrong – I need to get in there and cut it up,” he says. “But it’s a fanfare just before Jeff Beck’s Hi Ho Wolverhampton [Hi Ho Silver Lining]. I used to call him up when they played that and he used to hate it profusely… he hated that song.”

Robert Plant is touring with Saving Grace this November. The band features Suzi Dian (vocals), Oli Jefferson (percussion), Tony Kelsey (mandolin, baritone, acoustic guitar), and Matt Worley (banjo, acoustic, baritone guitars, cuatro). Tickets are still available.
