NAMM 2019 EBS debuts new bass amps, pedals and more
Sweden’s EBS put on a strong showing at Winter NAMM with a clutch of new bass products, led by the EBS Billy Sheehan Ultimate Signature Drive, the latest product of EBS’s collaboration with the bass star – in fact the third Sheehan pedal that EBS has so far offered.
The pedal splits the signal into two parallel paths – one clean and one with distortion – effectively as if running the sound through two different bass rigs simultaneously. The two Clean and Drive Level controls decides how the user set the mix and melt the paths together. For a tighter, more defined sound users can engage the built-in compressor.
EBS says the Phase Inverter switch brings back more low-end to the drive channel. The Boost footswitch kicks up the drive gain a notch when needed, and the new Hi or Lo Frequency Filter will move the whole frequency spectrum of the Tone filter up or down, to extend the capabilities of the pedal.
The individual Effect Loops for each channel can be used to colour the channels individually with external effects. The Clean Loop jack can also be used as a clean input on a bass that features dual outputs.
Also new was the EBS MicroBass 3, described as: ‘a new analogue ‘multi-tool’ for bass players.’ The MicroBass 3 is a 2-channel pre-amp which lets the user run the Clean and Drive channels in series or parallel. Use the dual balanced XLR-outputs to tap the signal post and pre EQ at the same time. With 10 Mohms input impedance, it handles any type of bass – passive, active or with piezo pickups. The MicroBass 3 also features a built-in tuner and an onboard compressor.
A new EBS amp is always interesting, not last because despite being a Class D amp the Reidmar 502 is described as: ‘ a lightweight bass amp that truly handles a 2-ohm load.’
Equipped with the EBS ‘Soft-clip’ design it is claimed to deliver significant punch, unlike typical digital lightweight amps which use limiters to inhibit clipping. The Reidmar 502 also features an onboard compressor, a balanced XLR recording output, effects loop, and headphones output.
