St. Vincent says this “hideously sexist” John Mayer ballad is the “worst song ever written”
St. Vincent has picked a John Mayer ballad as the “worst song ever written”. In her opinion, the single Daughters from his 2003 record, Heavier Things, is “sexist” but “pretends like it’s sweet”.
The track won Song Of The Year at the 2005 Grammy Awards, and lyrically explores how fathers in particular – but also mothers – should “be good” to their daughters so they can grow up to have healthy relationships.

At the chorus of the song, Mayer sings, “So fathers be good to your daughters / Daughters will love like you do / Girls become lovers who turn into mothers / So mothers be good to your daughters too.”
In conversation with Kerrang! for its “10 songs that changed my life” feature, St Vincent – also known as Annie Clark – selects a range of songs that remind her of pivotal moments of her life. Among the song that reminds her of school or her first love, she’s also asked to pick the song she thinks is the worst ever written, for which she lands on Mayer’s.
She says of the track, “It’s just so hideously sexist but it pretends to be a love song, but it’s really, really retrograde and really sexist. And I hate it… It’s so deeply misogynistic, which would be fine if you owned that, but it pretends like it’s sweet.”
This isn’t St. Vincent’s only hot music take in recent months, as she recently shared her thoughts on Leonard Cohen’s Hallelujah being overplayed by TV talent shows.
“The song itself is about the complication that it is to be alive, and the agony and the ecstasy and all of the inherent conflict therein,” she told BBC Radio 2.
“You know how, for a period of time, it became a song that people would cover on American Idol? People would sing it and just be like ‘hallelujah, haleluuuujah’ [she sings in a mocking tone]. It’s just the worst thing in the world.”
St. Vincent released her latest album, All Born Screaming, last April. You can catch her on tour this August.
