Tony Rawk’s Pro Luthier: YouTuber turns 14 skateboards into an electric guitar
YouTuber Burls Art is no stranger to out-there luthiery: he’s previously made guitars out of such materials as Himalayan rock salt, coloured pencils and coffee beans. His latest project? Turning 14 skateboards into a single guitar.
After removing their grip tape and any decals, getting them down to just the raw wood, Burls Art then welds together a steel press (as you do), in order to compress them vertically into a sandwich-like structure, with the edges of the boards forming the front of the body. To add a bit of flair, every few skateboards or so are stained – forming an intricate colour pattern.
Once this structure is sealed thanks to epoxy resin and a lot of glue, it forms the raw material that can then be shaped into both the body, neck and even fretboard of the guitar.
Some electronics, two humbuckers and a Stratocaster-type vibrato are added, for – as is the norm for Burls Art – a very unique-looking guitar. You can see the finished product below.
Despite the rather out-there construction methods, this is among the more traditional instruments Burls Art has made, mainly because it’s made of wood. The last time we took a look at his work he had made a Telecaster-style guitar out of Himalayan rock salt, which presents quite a few problems relating to brittleness, exposure to moisture and weight. That guitar also couldn’t have the neck also built out of rock salt, as string tension would likely have caused it to implode.
