Tyler Bryant blames Southwest Airlines for destroying his guitar case: “I really wish airlines would pride themselves in taking care of customers’ bags”

While luggage most often arrives in one piece, history is littered with examples of airline passengers discovering their bags suffered extensive damage while in transit.
In a recent case of dodgy baggage handling, Tyler Bryant had a close shave when flying with Southwest Airlines. He accuses the airline of banging up a guitar case containing Bryant’s “Pinky” signature Fender Strat. And it’s safe to say he’s certainly not happy about it.

Sharing photos of the damage on Instagram, Bryant writes: “Shoutout to Karura Case for protecting my instrument against Southwest Airlines who claimed that ‘these cases aren’t meant for travel.’”
Despite Southwest Airlines’ claim of the case not being up to scratch, the Karura put up a pretty good fight. There’s a few nasty dents and scrapes, and a latch that has entirely pulled away from the body of the case… but the guitar escaped unscathed.
“The case is ruined, but my guitar although wet, is still able to serve, thanks to this case,” Bryant praises. “Hard to imagine how hard of a hit this had to take to end up like this. I really wish airlines would pride themselves in taking care of customers bags.”

Earlier this year, singer Madi Diaz claimed the guitar she played alongside Harry Styles was destroyed by Delta Airlines. And, back in 2008, guitarist Dave Carroll’s guitar was broken when travelling with United Airlines.
Carroll’s case in particular caused quite a stir. In an act of revenge, he released three comedic protest tracks. And people were quickly drawn to Carroll’s twang of country defiance; while Carroll release the tracks in jest, the United Breaks Guitars trio of tracks raked in over 19 million views in a few days.
Unfortunately for the airline, the attention had a disastrous impact on stocks. As Marketplace reports, within five days United Airlines lost 10% of its market value. The sharp plummet cost shareholders around $180 million dollars. It’s an impact so strong that Harvard professors have even used it as a case study when researching customer service.
