Why Soccer Mommy thinks her cheap Mexican Fender sounds as good as her Novo Serus J

“Cheap guitars do not necessarily sound bad, or feel bad,” says indie rock sensation Soccer Mommy, as she showcases her modded purple Fender Lead III in the new episode of Guitar.com’s My Guitars & Me.
While not budget in the sense that an entry-level Squier might be, the Fender Lead III – from new – clocks in at about $599 – so it’s certainly on the more affordable end of the spectrum. “This guitar has actually become one of my favourites that I have,” Soccer Mommy, real name Sophie Allison, asserts.

She explains that her Fender Lead III is a great live guitar. “They kind of give you that feeling that you can get on a record of having multiple guitars going, compared to a Strat or a Tele.”
But while a cheap Mexican Fender is one of her favourites, she does make room for the higher end Novo Serus J.
“I have another one. It’s the same, they have all the same specs, but it’s in [Purple Sparkle].” Allison explains that she got the black Novo she shows us made because she flies so much and does so much touring. “I started getting scared I was going to destroy it. I mean, it has already gotten very scratched up. It’s the beater version.”
“They just feel great. I mean, the necks feel really good. As you can see, this one has taken a beating, but they stay in tune, they stay intonated. I picked up one the other day that I hadn’t played in months, and it was in tune.”
“Really, every single guitar just feels different, even if it’s the exact same type of guitar. It’s just about finding something that feels good for you.”
