NYNGD: New Year's New Guitar Days! NYNGD #2018-18

.
Welcome to Day 18 of my annual New Year’s New Guitar Days (NYNGD)!

Thanks for the kind words and comments on NYNGD #2018-17!

OK, guys, after a little break, I am back with another NYNGD! I also decided to start doing larger photos — the old format is really from like 6 years ago. These larger ones give you a better look. Maybe I’ll go back and make the other guitars larger; maybe not — we’ll see.

AND ONLY THREE REMAIN! Getting closer! Now here’s a fact: any one of these last three guitars could equally win the coveted slot as the Grand FinaleTM! They are all stunning and awesome and, honestly, I struggled and debated what order to show these last three. Then I said “F-it” and here we are!

Today’s NYNGD is a very special, one-off Axis. She has a natural pomelle bubinga top, a mahogany back stained red, a roasted maple neck and fretboard, black binding, and chrome hardware. Bubinga top! Have you ever seen one of those from EBMM? No sir, you have not! The bubinga has a very slight reddish hint in the brown, the red back is outta this world, and the black binding is such a nice alternative to the standard cream binding. As good as this guitar looks in the photos, it is 10x better in person. I just couldn’t capture the richness of the top. Just awesome.

I have her tuned a 1/2 step flat to Eb. Just… because. The Super Slinkys are really slinky on this gal, and she feels SOOOO good. The sound is unlike any other Axis — the real standout feature is the neck pickup: this thing sounds like Hendrix wailing a solo on the neck pickup of his Strat. Never heard a humbucker sound like this. So amazing. In bridge pickup mode, it’s an Axis, alright, but tight and punchy (even with .009’s tuned a half step flat, which usually is a bit more brown).

This is the kind of guitar you play unplugged for hours and your wife/girlfriend finds you asleep on the couch at 3am. How do I know? Happened last night. Question is: was it my wife or my girlfriend who found me 😀 (on Valentine’s Day, no less).

You all agree this is a Top 3 guitar and could even be #1, right? We’ll have to see what the next two bring to the table!

I’ll be back in the next few days with another NYNGD: New Year’s New Guitar Day! Thanks for looking everyone!

(The back story in case you’re new to my NYNGD: For the past couple of years I’ve done a fun thing that most of you I think enjoyed, and I thought I would do it again this year. Every year, I am a slacker about keeping my Guitar Gallery up to date… So, as a fun holiday thing, let’s launch a guitar in the Guitar Gallery each day leading up to New Years Eve! In the past I’ve received PM’s about my collection and whether I play all of these guitars. 🙂 The same question came up during my NYNGD posts a few years ago and my answer was pretty detailed and well thought-out, so please check it out here!)

(Also, in case anybody gets any funny ideas — these guitars are not at my house. They are all in my very secure and alarmed studio facility. I usually only have two guitars floating around the house…)
