Swiss Luthier Patrick Hufschmid Unveils Groundbreaking 7-String Guitar
Near Montreux, Switzerland – Local artisan Patrick Hufschmid is proud to introduce a striking innovation in guitar design with his latest creation, an extended scale 7-string guitar that masterfully blends artistry with precision engineering. Known for his unique contributions to the guitar world, Hufschmid has once again pushed the boundaries of what is possible in instrument craftsmanship.
The guitar features a top crafted from RichLite, a sustainable material made from recycled paper, known for its durability and excellent vibrational qualities. This top is not just a functional component; it’s a piece of art, adorned with a deeply engraved honeycomb pattern that not only enhances the guitar’s aesthetics but also contributes to weight reduction.
A pioneering feature of this guitar is the world’s first 7-string scalloped nut made from PEEK (polyetheretherketone), a material revered for its mechanical strength and thermal stability. This innovation ensures exceptional tuning stability and sound clarity, qualities that are crucial for both studio recordings and live performances.
The fingerboard showcases Hufschmid SpectraLum Inlays©, an exclusive design featuring glow-in-the-dark materials set in crystal-clear, bubble-free resin. These are not just ordinary fret markers but a revolutionary approach to enhancing both the functionality and visual appeal of the guitar.
This instrument boasts an extended scale length of 666 millimeters (26.3 inches), meticulously crafted to balance the demands of a 7-string guitar. The creation of this guitar was an ambitious project, particularly due to the intricate honeycomb pattern, which required innovative techniques to maintain the highest standards of quality.
Hufschmid’s guitar is also a tribute to his personal journey in guitar building, featuring a “stage grip” inspired by the Ibanez Jem, the guitar that sparked his passion for this craft in the early ’90s. Moreover, it includes custom Alumitone humbuckers, laser engraved with the name ‘tantalum’, linking it to Hufschmid’s flagship model.
This guitar is not only a testament to Hufschmid’s legacy of innovation but also a rare gem in the guitar world, with materials like the SpectraLum Inlays© nearly depleted, making it potentially one of a kind.
