Bring Me The Horizon’s Oli Sykes left with mild concussion after being struck by a phone mid-gig
The bizarre phenomenon of fans pelting their idols with hard objects continues. Following on from Eric Clapton being struck by a vinyl record last week, Bring Me The Horizon’s Oli Sykes has suffered a mild concussion after being hit in the head by a phone.
Unfortunately, the incident took place just four tracks into Bring Me The Horizon’s show at St. Louis’ Enterprise Centre on Monday (11th May). In a fan video, you can see Sykes rounding off Happy Song before a phone flies directly into his head – exactly in time with the final kick of drums. “Who the fuck just threw a phone at my fuckin’ head?” Sykes asks the crowd, before mumbling a rather annoyed, “You fuckin’ tosser.”

For the rest of the show, Sykes continually rubbed at the area on his forehead where the phone had struck. During Can You Feel My Heart in particular Sykes took the instrumental break to properly cradle his head, allowing fans to hark back the lyrics as he kneels down for a moment.

While Sykes soldiered on and completed the show, he wasn’t on his usual form. Fans noted that he didn’t run down to interact with the crowd as he usually would during Drown, either due to his mood souring or simply because he was in too much pain.
Last night, Sykes took to his Instagram to share an update on the incident. “Just wanted to let you know I’m all good,” he clarified. “The phone to the head definitely smarted, and I ended up with a mild concussion, but the swelling’s gone down a decent amount already.”
“Last night I was struggling a bit on stage afterwards because singing was putting a lot of pressure on the wound and making things feel a bit disorienting while performing,” he continued. “I’m sorry on my part for what may have seemed like a half-hearted performance.”
“Appreciate everyone checking in and worrying about me, though. Everything should be fine for tonight’s gig.”

Considering the growing number of injuries as a result of throwing things at band members, it’s surprising that people are still trying their luck. It wouldn’t come as a surprise if more bands opted for phone bans, like Ghost, just to cut down on phone-related injuries.
At the very least, if phones are band, fans might stick to throwing softer objects onstage. Just last month, a fan gave Sykes a crocheted hat that they had made for the frontman – complete with a smaller matching counterpart, made specifically for one of his two young children. “Aw, mate, is this for one of the babies?” he asked, before adding a heartfelt thank you.
