Izzy Stradlin’s Appetite-era ES-175D to go up for auction, starting at $50,000

Guns N’ Roses guitarist Izzy Stradlin’s Gibson ES-175D will be going up for auction later this month. The hollow-bodied electric was used on the Appetite For Destruction recording sessions, and will start with a bid of $50,000.
The guitar was made in 1987, and was acquired that same year by Stradlin via Gibson artist rep Roger Bell. Alongside appearing on the band’s breakout record, it was played by him at the 2 February Guns N’ Roses show at The Ritz in New York, filmed by MTV. More recently, the pro-shot footage of this gig has been widely circulated online.
Stradlin then sold the guitar to Guns N’ Roses’ first manager, Howie Hubberman. Hubberman also owned the LA guitar store Guitars R US, through which it was sold to a local band before ending up in the hands of a, according to the auction site, “veteran music industry executive.” It’s this latest owner who has initiated the upcoming sale.
Included with the guitar is its original case, a professional summary document by the current owner, as well as a signed and notarised statement from Howie Hubberman.
The auction is being hosted by Backstage Auctions and is set to begin on 20 March this year. Backstage Auctions has also contacted former Guns N’ Roses managers Alan Niven and Doug Goldstein, as well as the attorney for Izzy Stradlin, to verify the guitar’s provenance.
