Black Sabbath: “This is the actual end, unless someone digs us up!”
Black Sabbath’s forthcoming Back to the Beginning show in July is shaping up to be one of the biggest metal events in history. Sabbath’s original lineup – Ozzy Osbourne, Tony Iommi, Bill Ward and Geezer Butler – are set to be supported by the likes of Metallica, Slayer, Pantera, Gojira and many more. So yeah, it’s gonna be big.
But this isn’t the first time the metal pioneers have sold a show or tour as their last. Most recently, the band embarked on a trek named The End between 2016 and 2017, with Osbourne, Iommi and Butler joined by Tommy Clufetos in place of Bill Ward.

But with each member in their mid-to-late 70s, they say 2025’s Back to the Beginning show will be the last time we’ll see them perform together onstage.
“I’ll never say never, because I’ve said never too many times before, and look what happened,” Butler says in a new interview with Classic Rock.
“But I seriously think this is the actual end. Unless someone digs us up or finds our DNA in the future and recreates us.”
Tony Iommi says he “didn’t originally want to do this one”, adding: “I’d already closed the door on it, and I thought that was it.”
Sharon Osbourne – who recently recalled the time she had fans throw baked beans at Iron Maiden’s Bruce Dickinson – also confirms that this will be Ozzy Osbourne’s final show, “one thousand percent”.
“Everything that Ozzy’s ever wanted to do, he’s done,” she says. “Every place he’s ever wanted to go. He’s just had an incredible life. He’s done. Literally, after this we’re going to go home and shut the door.”
That said, Ozzy doesn’t plan to stop recording new music, only call it quits on performing live shows.
“As far as recording goes, I still enjoy doing my own work,” he says. “For the foreseeable future I will keep on recording, if the projects interest me.”
Black Sabbath’s Back to the Beginning show takes place 5 July at Villa Park in Birmingham. As you might expect, tickets sold out pretty quickly – some for thousands – but you can find out more information at ozzy.com.
