Collings announces the 470 JL, a new signature electric for Julian Lage

NAMM 2021: Collings has announced a new signature guitar for Julian Lage – notably, it’s an electric guitar. Lage has previously worked with Collings for signature acoustic models.
The guitar features a fully hollow construction, along with a trestle block for more stability.  Its body is solid Honduran mahogany, with a maple laminate top. The set Honduran mahogany neck is topped with 12-inch radius 22-fret ebony fingerboard. It also features a hybrid profile, combining a C and V shape. Similarly, the guitar’s scale length is also a bit of a hybrid, measuring in at 24.875 inches – just slightly longer than a standard 24.75-inch scale.
The tune-o-matic-style bridge is set into a pinned ebony base, while the tailpiece is a B3 Bigsby vibrato for some subtle wobble.
Electronics come in the form of Ron Ellis Ellisonics, a choice inspired by Lage’s affinity for vintage Dynasonic single-coils, and their dynamic, lively response. The Ellisonics are voiced to be a little louder than true vintage single-coils while still retaining that same response. They’re controlled by a master volume and two tone controls.
You can hear the guitar in action below, as well as Lage discussing the various design choices that went into the move from acoustic to electric.
