David Gilmour’s guitars smash auction records at Christie’s

David Gilmour’s famed White Strat sold for $1,815,000 at the Christie’s auction today, breaking the record for the most expensive Stratocaster.
It was among 120 guitars in the Pink Floyd man’s collection that went on the block, with many of them setting new world auction records. All sales proceeds will go towards charitable causes.
Besides the White Strat, a 1969 Martin D-35 went for $1,095,000 – a new record for a Martin guitar, eclipsing the 1939 OOO-42 owned by Eric Clapton, which sold for $791,500 back in 2004.
Alongside record auction prices for some of Gilmour’s more distinguished six strings, the sale also saw ludicrous prices hit for niche instruments such as a 1974 Jedson lap-steel model, used for live performances of the Syd Barrett-dedicated Shine On You Crazy Diamond, realising $300,000, despite its estimate of just $2,000.
Ahead of the auction, the genius behind Dark Side Of The Moon spoke to Christie’s stating that the guitars have “given so much to me, it’s time for them to move on to other people who hopefully will find joy”.
