Did Doja Cat rip off Plini at her MTV European Music Awards performance?

When Doja Cat took the stage at the recent MTV European Music Awards to perform a progressive metal-inflected take on her disco hit Say So, it perked the ears of a virtuoso guitarist from the other side of the world: Plini.

The Australian guitarist insinuated that Doja Cat might have borrowed some of his djent rhythms and arrangements for her EMA set over the weekend (9 November). “Someone tell @DojaCat that if she digs the arrangement of this at 2:50 onwards, then she would love my song Handmade Cities,” he tweeted.

Already, comparison videos between the two performances have flooded YouTube. But while some fans of the guitarist expressed outrage, Plini appeared to harbour no ill will towards Doja Cat and her band.
“@DojaCat should make more music with heavy guitar cos it sounds wicked,” Plini tweeted in response to a suggestion by Stray From The Path drummer Craig Reynolds that it’s “better to use this energy to get Plini and insane pop gig”. Read his tweet here:

Handmade Cities is the titular tune off Plini’s 2016 debut album. On 27 November, the Australian virtuoso will be launching his second album, titled Impulse Voices.
