“For a rock band like Guns N’ Roses it doesn’t apply”: Why Duff McKagan is not worried about AI music
From vocal cloning tools and posthumous, artificial intelligence-aided releases to guitar amps that can learn and recommend you tones, the AI revolution in music is only just beginning.
Artists and fans alike have been divided on the technology’s use, with proponents like Grimes praising AI for its potential to help “actual talent really rise to the top” while Slipknot’s Corey Taylor called it an “even worse example of technology taking over for talent” than Pro Tools.
As far as rock ‘n’ roll is concerned, Duff McKagan, for one, believes that AI isn’t much of a threat – at least not for a band like Guns N’ Roses.

Speaking in a new Classic Rock interview, the bassist says, “As far as music goes, for a rock band like Guns N’ Roses it doesn’t apply. I don’t think it could.”
“There’s nothing better than sitting down and writing a song on an acoustic guitar. There’ll never be anything better than that,” he adds.
“I see there’s Al art on Instagram on Guns N’ Roses, and some of the stuff’s great, and my skin always looks amazing in it. I’m like: ‘I like this AI, my hair! That coat! I wish I had that coat!’ But in seriousness, I don’t know enough about it. As far as it applies to music, I don’t see it at all.”
McKagan’s views on AI will not come as a surprise for fans of the band. Earlier this year, Guns N’ Roses released an AI-generated music video for their new single The General.
Produced with Dan Potter, creative director of London-based studio Creative Works, the video consists of live footage interspersed with animated sequences that were created using artificial intelligence.
Elsewhere, McKagan also shared that there’s new Guns N’ Roses music on the horizon even though “I don’t know how we’re gonna put it out”.
