GRETSCH Drums Announces Leadership Transition at USA Production in Ridgeland, South Carolina
Gretsch Drums have announced an important leadership transition at its U.S. production facility in Ridgeland, South Carolina. After more than 25 years of shaping the sound and reputation of Gretsch’s USA-made drums, longtime production leader Paul Cooper is passing the baton to his successor, Josh Safer.
Since joining Gretsch in the late 1990s, Paul Cooper has been instrumental in carrying forward the brand’s proud legacy. His craftsmanship, passion, and creative spirit have directly influenced iconic series such as the USA Custom and Broadkaster, helping them remain at the forefront of drum making for professionals around the world.
Fred Gretsch, President – Fred W. Gretsch Enterprises, LTD, who personally brought Paul into the company, reflects:
“When I first met Paul, I knew he had the heart and the hands to honor the Gretsch tradition. Over the past 25 years, he has done more than just build drums – he has built trust, respect, and continuity for generations of Gretsch players. We owe him a tremendous debt of gratitude.”
For the past 20 years, Josh Safer has trained under Paul’s guidance, learning every detail of the craft and every nuance of the Ridgeland operation. With deep knowledge of the processes and the unique qualities that define Gretsch USA drums, Josh now steps into the leadership role.
Hans-Peter Messner, CEO & President of GEWA music, adds:
“Paul is a one-of-a-kind human being – a remarkable personality whose dedication and skill have made an incredible contribution to the Gretsch brand. We are forever thankful. At the same time, I am excited to see Josh take on this responsibility. With his experience, vision, and passion, I am confident he will guide Ridgeland into a bright future.”
Though stepping back from day-to-day operations, Paul will remain an ambassador, advisor, and creative partner for Gretsch. Known for his eye for innovation, he will continue to influence the brand and, without doubt, surprise the community with exciting new developments in the future.
Paul Cooper (Gretsch Ambassador, Advisor, and creative partner) shares:
“I am truly thankful for the opportunity I have had at Gretsch since 1998. It has been an amazing journey. I am so thankful to the wonderful team of people that have worked for me over the years and the thousands of drummers and Gretsch fans that I have met. Josh has worked for me since 2003 and helped immensely in moving the brand forward over the years. He is uniquely qualified to carry on the tradition of building these beautiful instruments.”
Joshua Safer – Director of Operations Gretsch Drums USA states:
“I am beyond grateful for the opportunity to take charge of the Gretsch USA production. I have worked closely with Paul for 22 years, and he has instilled in me not only the knowledge of everything Gretsch, but an ethos of integrity, that I believe will help me lead the Gretsch brand into the future. I assure you we I will work tirelessly to keep delivering to everyone “That Great Gretsch sound”.
Fans and drumming enthusiasts will have the chance to meet Paul in person at The PASIC Show in Indianapolis, where he will appear as part of the Gretsch family.
With this transition, Gretsch Drums reaffirms its commitment to preserving its rich heritage while embracing the next generation of leadership.
