Guitar.com Live: Kirk Fletcher goes deep into his blues influences, playing style and more
Guitar.com Live: Respected bluesman Kirk Fletcher sat down for an intimate conversation with Michael Watts where he went deep into his guitar playing philosophy, influences and much more. The interview streamed on the final day of the virtual guitar show.
Fletcher’s sixth and latest record, My Blues Pathway, saw him take a back-to-basics approach to his playing, and this also meant rediscovering the magic of single-coil guitars – like the Squier Japan Stratocaster from his days as a beginner.
After cycling through numerous guitars – from Gibson Les Pauls and ES-335s to Telecasters and even a PRS David Grissom signature model – Fletcher found a workhorse Fender Stratocaster to provide the tones he needed to pull off his own signature sound.
“Over this time I really thought about what I wanted to do with my playing, what i need from a guitar, creating more of my own stamp instead of just playing what all my heroes played,” Fletcher said.
“All roads [led] to finding a guitar that could do it all a little bit – it doesn’t have to do everything perfect – you know, no one guitar’s gonna sound exactly like everything. But single-coil kinda tones, humbucker tones all in one guitar […] it had a lot going for it.”
