Harmony teams up with Reverb to reissue the 8418 tube combo
Harmony has teamed up with Reverb to reissue the 8418 tube combo for a limited run. The amp was first manufactured by the brand in the 1950s.
Harmony, now under the ownership of BandLab Technologies – which has also acquired Teisco, MONO and Guitar.com – recently relaunched its standard series of guitars with three new models.
The small five-watt combo features the same no-frills approach as the original. All of the amp’s circuitry is hand-wired, and the reissue has been designed using the original blueprints. Two instrument input jacks are on offer here, while a single volume knob governs the output.
The 8418 is loaded with an Italian-made 6-inch Jensen speaker, with an alnico magnet for a period-accurate voicing. It’s driven by the combination of a 6SJ7 preamp tube and a single 6V6 power tube – a pairing chosen to recreate the warm tone of 1950s tube amps.
The single control on the 8418 doesn’t mean a lack of versatility – the responsive nature of the preamp means will it will break up into natural overdrive when hit hard by pedals, or even just aggressively-played humbuckers. The amp still has headroom available, however, and can clean up well enough to become a platform for a pedalboard-based sound.
