“I went to a Jimi Hendrix concert… I thought it was a bunch of noise. I left”: Frank Marino recalls how he was unimpressed with seeing Hendrix live

Mahogany Rush leader Frank Marino has opened up about the time he attended a Jimi Hendrix gig, an experience that left him rather “unimpressed”.
Comparisons between the two’s playing style have been rife throughout Marino’s career, accompanied by a persistent rumour that Marino had a supernatural encounter with Hendrix’s spirit during an acid trip-induced hospital stay.

Shooting down the tale in a recent interview with Guitar World, Marino says: “[What was true is that] I went to the hospital, learned how to play guitar in hospital, and came out and played the music of the day: Hendrix, the Beatles, the Doors, and other stuff from the late ‘60s.”
“Maybe I did the Hendrix part a little too well because this writer wrote this ridiculous piece, and that was the bizarre beginning that followed me.”
Marino adds that his first encounter with the guitar legend’s music did not, in fact, go down as well as one might expect, saying: “In ’68, I went to a Jimi Hendrix concert before I was a guitar player – and before I’d gone to the hospital.”
“I left. I thought it was a bunch of noise. I left, and was the only person who left. Later, when Hendrix’s name followed me everywhere, it almost felt like Jimi Hendrix was saying, ‘I’ll make sure you never forget my name.’ It was hard.”
Prompted on Mahogany Rush’s 1972 debut album Maxoom, which Marino recorded at just 16 years old, the guitarist says: “My intention was to simply play rock guitar music in a band. It was as simple as that. You didn’t have a lot of 16-year olds doing that, you know?”
“I was 13 when I went into the hospital and 14 when I started to play guitar. By 16, I’d made an album, which didn’t come out until two years later.”
