IK Multimedia launches plugin emulating Joe Satriani’s amp sound for Eddie Van Halen parts
IK Multimedia has released a plugin to emulate the amp used by Joe Satriani to take on some of Eddie Van Halen’s most iconic guitar parts on his Best of All Words tour with Sammy Hagar.
Satriani worked with Dylana Scott at 3rd Power Amplification to create an amp that would emulate what he and Hagar thought of as Van Halen’s greatest tone – the Live Without a Net rig from 1986, with modded Marshalls with power soaks and effects processing.

Scott came up with the Dragon 100 amp, used by Satriani throughout the Best of All Words tour, but nobody else has been able to obtain the tone so far.
Until now. Before Satriani headed off on the tour, IK Multimedia captured the sound and added it to the Joe Satriani Amp Vault Signature Collection, launched last month.
The eight new Dragon 100 models, dialled in by Satriani and captured with IK’s AI modelling technology at Hagar’s Red Rocker Studios in California, offer Plexi tones with a dynamic response perfect for both single notes and chords.
The models are included for any new users, and can be downloaded for free for those who use the collection already. Altogether, there are 67 tone models in there.
“My 3rd Power Dragon 100 amp is a vintage-sounding and modern-featured head inspired by the legendary 1967/1968 Plexi Super Lead 100,” says Satriani himself. “It sounds like a roaring Plexi recorded with the best mics, preamps and EQs, perfectly balanced like a great, legendary recorded guitar track.
“Harmonically rich and touch-sensitive with plenty of gain on tap, there’s nothing quite like it. It’s my favourite new amp.”
If you haven’t got your hands on the Satch Amp Vault yet, it costs $/€99.99, and you’ll find a range of his classic sounds as well as some rarer options – and the Dragon 100 models. Head to IK Multimedia for more information.
Want to get your hands on the physical thing? You can preorder the Dragon 100 from Bananas at Large, and you’ll likely be waiting between three and six months. It’s available in a range of 25, 45 and 100-watt heads and combos and will set you back, at minimum, a cool $2,999.
