“I’ve spent a night or two at his house, and we’ve ended up with guitars in the kitchen and on the porch”: Is a Jerry Cantrell and James Hetfield collaboration on the horizon?

When two rock legends like Jerry Cantrell and James Hetfield casually jam together, it’s hard not to wonder what could come from it.
Though fans might not have to imagine for long, as Cantrell recently teased the possibility of a collaboration with the Metallica frontman, sending fans of both bands into a frenzy over what such a team-up might sound like.

Answering fan questions in the new issue of Metal Hammer, the Alice in Chains guitarist was asked if he’d make an album with Hetfield, to which he replies: “James and I have talked about it, kind of.”
“We never had a formal conversation but I’ve jammed with him at Kirk [Hammett, Metallica guitarist]’s place. I’ve even spent a night or two at his house, and we’ve ended up with guitars in the kitchen and on the porch,” he adds.
The pair have collaborated on numerous stages over the years; Cantrell also featured on Metallica’s 1998 covers compilation album, Garage Inc., showing off his guitar chops on the track Tuesday’s Gone by Lynyrd Skynyrd.
As far as making new music is concerned, “It’s something I’d be really curious about, even to just write a song with him,” says Cantrell, though he jokes that Metallica’s busy schedule might get in the way of that.
“As for whether it’d turn into something more than that, he’s got a pretty demanding day job. Ha ha! So I’d understand if it never comes to be.”
In other news, longtime Metallica bassist Robert Trujillo recently opened up about his role within the band and the reason he prefers to take a backseat during songwriting sessions.
“Even with Ozzy, I was getting into some serious writing before I left. That’s always been important to me,” Trujillo told Ultimate Guitar. “But at the same time, I’m joining Metallica, and these guys write amazing songs, and I’m just not going to suddenly insert myself into [it].”
“I like to keep people happy and comfortable. My role is always to support what’s needed for the team. I’m writing a song with the guys, I’m contributing that way.”
