Japanese man arrested, 40 guitars seized after numerous complaints by neighbours
Rock and roll might be a way to stick it to the man, but in Japan, if you rock too hard, the man will take your guitars.
As reported by The Japan Times, a 61-year-old Kyoto resident name Kazunori Yokoi recently had 40 guitars seized and was arrested after his neighbours complained for years about him playing guitar too loudly.
Apparently, Yokoi was playing so loud that the complaining neighbours faced adverse health effects, including sleep deprivation and tinnitus.

After the residents made multiple reports to no result, cops finally got involved. To back up the complaints with evidence, police measured the decibel level in the neighbourhood, which at times registered over 80 dB – about the same as a vacuum cleaner or a crowded train station.
And apparently the guitar playing wasn’t always all that musical, either… “It was awful because all kinds of sounds were jumbled together all day,” says one of the older neighbours.
According to his neighbours, when Yokoi wasn’t shredding his heart out, he was broadcasting his stereo out his window at full blast. No matter how good he was at playing or how fire his playlist was, it’s understandable how that could be rather disruptive.
The Japan Times stated that Yokoi was arrested for assault. In addition to his 40 guitars, which were “mostly electric” the police took amps and a CD and radio cassette player.
Usually when guitars are involved in crime, it’s because people are stealing the instruments and selling them. Not because someone is playing too loud. Back in April, police busted an organized crime ring focused on stealing guitars from a series of Guitar Center retail stores along the West Coast of the United States.
Rebellion is very much in the spirit of rock and roll, and it seems Kazunori Yokoi had a serious case of stick it to the man-eosis. Still, to play so disruptively that police come and confiscate your instruments – and arrest you – has to be worthy of some kind of medal.
