Kurt Cobain’s Fender Mustang fetches $340,000 at auction
The iconic Fender Mustang that Kurt Cobain used on Nirvana’s In Utero tour has sold for $340,000 at an auction yesterday.
The sky-blue, left-handed offset was custom-built for the late legend in 1993 by Scott Zimmerman, who was working at FujiGen at the time, according to Julien’s Auctions. Zimmerman was also responsible for designing the necks on Cobain’s Fender Jag-Stang models. This particular guitar is one of six Mustangs that FujiGen had sent the Nirvana man before his death.
Image: Julien’s AuctionsThe auction house continues: “When this guitar arrived in the United States, Cobain’s guitar tech further customised it, adding a black Seymour Duncan JB pickup instead of the stock single-coil, and a Gotoh tune-o-matic bridge. This guitar was known as ‘Skystang III’, as reflected by a label on the original case.”
Besides the Mustang, another one of Cobain’s personal effects went under the hammer: the olive-green cardigan he wore during the MTV Unplugged In New York session. It fetched $334,000 to become the most expensive sweater ever sold at auction.
