Kurt Cobain’s Fender Mustang to be put up for auction

Kurt Cobain’s custom-built Fender Mustang, played on the In Utero tour, will go up for auction at Julien Auction’s Icons and Idols event, taking place Friday 25 and Saturday 26 October 2019. The auction will be held in New York’s Hard Rock Cafe, as well as online. Cobain’s guitar, made for him in 1993 by Scott Zimmerman, is finished in turquoise with a red mottled pickguard. Zimmerman was contacted by Fender to build the guitar as the Fender Custom shop was not equipped to build left-handed Mustangs at the time were ordered. This specific one was shipped on October 22, 1993. Only the two guitars shipped on that date have the “Offset Contour Body Patented” stamp.
Another legendary guitar that will go on sale at the event is Elvis Presley’s 1968 solid rosewood Telecaster. The first prototype of its kind, it was made for Presley by luthier Phil Kubicki at the Fender Custom Shop.
The guitars are being auctioned alongside many other items of iconic rock’n’roll heritage, including Elvis Presley’s 1976 Harley Davidson XLH Sportster, and handwritten lyrics sheets from Bob Dylan, Eric Clapton, and Bruce Springsteen.
