Listen to a snippet of Unfinished, the final song recorded by Alex and Eddie Van Halen
A previously unreleased song composed and recorded by Eddie Van Halen and his brother Alex is set to be released next month.
Arriving as part of the audiobook version of Alex Van Halen’s upcoming memoir, Brothers, Unfinished is the final track recorded by the siblings before Eddie’s passing in October 2020.

The Van Halen drummer has taken to Instagram to reveal a snippet of the song, though fans hoping to hear Eddie’s iconic vocals will be disappointed, as the track appears to be a mid-tempo instrumental with no singing based on what we’ve heard so far.

Co-written with New Yorker writer Ariel Levy, Brothers will be out on 22 October via Harper Collins. Alex — who has largely remained out of the public eye since Eddie’s passing — called the 384-page memoir “my tribute to my brother; my way of saying goodbye. Ed, I love you and miss you. When I see you again, I’m gonna kick your ass!”
“I was with him from day one,” the older Van Halen writes in the book. “We shared the experience of coming to this country and figuring out how to fit in. We shared a record player, an 800 square foot house, a mom and dad, and a work ethic.”
“Later, we shared the back of a tour bus, alcoholism, the experience of becoming famous, of becoming fathers and uncles, and of spending more hours in the studio than I’ve spent doing anything else in this life. We shared a depth of understanding that most people can only hope to achieve in a lifetime.”
The book is said to feature never-before-seen photos from Alex’s private archive.
