Mark Tremonti says the other members of Creed would “constantly push back” on him trying to make the band more metal
Creed could have had a much more metal-oriented sound if Mark Tremonti had his way, the guitarist has said.
Despite being “the metal guy” in the band, Tremonti’s bandmates were more schooled in other kinds of rock music, meaning they were less inclined to go down the sonic routes he suggested.

In an interview with Guitar Player, Tremonti is asked if the genre categorisations Creed typically had – post-grunge or alt-metal – had an effect on the way he wrote.
“No. To begin with, I think our band was like a melting pot of different styles,” he explains. “I loved Alice In Chains and Soundgarden when they came out but my influences came from way before then. I was the metal guy in the band, while Scott grew up listening to a lot of Elvis, the Doors and classic rock. He was very sheltered early on; I don’t think a lot of rock and roll was getting played in his house. Brian was a Rush guy, Scott Phillips’ favourite band was Living Colour.
“So as the guy who wrote most of Creed’s music, I would come with metal. And they would constantly push back on me, saying it was ‘too metal’. I had to fit the mould with the rest of the guys, and that’s how we got our sound.”
In other news, Tremonti recently spoke about the time he was told Creed would be “one hit wonders”.
Speaking to Guitar Interactive Magazine, Tremonti recalls, “Throughout our early careers with Creed, we were always told that we were going to be either one-hit wonders or have one hit record, and everybody’s always telling us that it was impossible to do the things that we were going to do.”
He adds, “I know I was always fighting for survival, and always just worried that one day I would not be able to write songs for a profession anymore. It always scared the hell out of me. When we came out with the second record, when that first song came out, and the response to it was huge, that made me feel a little more secure in our career. It did very well.”
