NAMM 2021: Gibson refreshes its signature SG model for Kirk Douglas of The Roots

NAMM 2021: Gibson has launched a refreshed signature SG model for “Captain” Kirk Douglas, guitarist of the Late Night With Jimmy Fallon house band The Roots.
The guitar expands on the first Kirk Douglas Signature SG from 2013 – which sold out its original run of 400 units quickly. The 2021 reissue however, is much more than just a rerun and stars new hardware features and finishes.

The SG has a mahogany body and SlimTaper neck with a rosewood fingerboard. It has a trio of Burstbucker humbuckers – each with its own push-pull volume control and coil-splitting talents. As for tone control, that’s handled by a single master tone knob.
The signature “Captain” Lyre Tail Vibrola tailpiece not only offers players smooth vibrato action but gives the guitar a suave vintage look. On the Ebony model, there’s gold plated hardware and a black pickguard, while the Inverness Green guitar has nickel hardware and a white pickguard instead.
Douglas himself is a big fan of the guitar’s coil-splitting function saying it lets him “get a lot of different musical colours” out of a single instrument.
Image: Gibson“What I love about the Gibson SG is I am able to get my Les Paul tones and I’m able to get the single-coil pickup tones,” he explained in a statement. “This guitar is extremely versatile, and by utilising the pull up feature on each volume knob you can get a lot of tones”.

The Gibson Kirk Douglas Signature SG will retail at $2,499. An official release date has yet to be announced.
