Rick Grohl’d: Watch Rick Astley cover the Foo Fighters’ Everlong
Rick Astley has released a home-recorded version of the Foo Fighters hit Everlong, accompanied by nothing but his acoustic guitar. Take a look above.
Introducing the cover, Astley explains his choice: “Sometimes you just have to find the song that’s gonna lift your spirits and put you in another place, and I’ve been doing that a lot recently with music. And one of the bands I always go to – believe it or not – is Foo Fighters, so here we go. Here’s my version of a song of theirs called Everlong.”
Astley first found fame with his debut solo recording, Never Gonna Give You Up, which was initially released in 1987 to immediate success, becoming the best-selling single of that year. After a temporary retirement from music in the 1990s to focus on his family, Astley returned to music in 2001 with his record Keep It Turned On. He would return to touring in 2004.
Similarly, his first hit would also be revived in the 2000s, as Rickrolling became more prevalent from 2007 onwards. Since its upload to YouTube, the Never Gonna Give You Up’s music video has accumulated over 708 million views.
Rick Astley is no stranger to the Foo Fighters, either, having collaborated with them live several times. The fan-shot video below shows a performance of Never Gonna Give You Up alongside the band.
It’s also not Astley’s first time coving Everlong, as he’s included it in his live sets since 2017.
