Ryan Adams cleared of charges in FBI investigation into inappropriate messages to underage fan

Ryan Adams has reportedly been cleared of sexting an underage fan, following an FBI investigation into the matter.
The investigation began following a New York Times report from February 2019 that saw seven women accuse the singer of being “manipulative, obsessive and controlling,” and using his position as an established singer and the promise of a jump-started career to lure them into abusive relationships. Accusers included Adams’ ex-wife Mandy Moore, Phoebe Bridgers and a fan who alleged that she swapped sexual messages with Adams when she was still underage.
The New York Times reported that it had seen “extensive communication” between Adams and a bass-playing fan, including a chain of direct messages on Twitter that allegedly began when she was 14, and more than 3,000 text messages sent between the pair up until she was 16.
Although they never met in person, the fan also claimed that they had video calls over Skype. According to the New York Times Adams also asked her about her age. “Do me a paranoid favour,” he reportedly wrote in November 2014, when he was 40 and she was 16, “Show me you are 18.”
Page Six has since now reported that the FBI found no evidence to support criminal charges against Adams. “Ultimately, the FBI found no evidence that would support charging Ryan with a crime, and closed its investigation, without charges, in the fall of 2019,” a source told the publication.
Adams, through his lawyer, Andrew Brettler, denied that he “ever engaged in inappropriate online sexual communications with someone he knew was underage.”
In July of 2020, Adams also gave a lengthy statement in the Daily Mail, apologising for his past behaviour. “No amount of growth will ever take away the suffering I had caused,” he wrote. “I will never be off the hook and I am fully accountable for my harmful behaviour, and will be for my actions moving forward. I hope that the people I’ve hurt will heal. And I hope that they will find a way to forgive me.”
“I get that and I also understand that there’s no going back. To a lot of people this will just seem like the same empty bullshit apology that I’ve always used when I was called out, and all I can say is, this time it is different.”
The statement concluded with Adam revealing that he had begun the process of getting sober with professional help.
