Sammy Hagar misses Eddie Van Halen so much, he’d re-live “nightmare” 2004 reunion tour, “just to play with the guy again”
It seems there’s not a lot that Sammy Hagar wouldn’t do if it meant he had the chance to play with Eddie Van Halen again – even re-doing Van Halen‘s shambolic 2004 reunion tour, which the guitarist previously described as, “the worst experience of my life”.

In a recently resurfaced 2016 interview, the Red Rocker described the band’s 2004 World Tour as a “nightmare”, mainly because of Eddie’s heavy substance abuse at the time: “It was horrible,” he told AXS TV. “He did horrible things to people. He treated people so badly… he was a complete raving maniac.”
Now, however, it seems that time and Eddie’s tragic passing in 2020 has mellowed Hagar on the time – in fact he tells Ultimate Classic Rock that not only does he doesn’t even remember the tour and its fallout.
“As a matter of fact,” he explains. “I miss Eddie so much I would go do that (2004) tour again, just to play with the guy again. I miss the guy. Our creativity when we were on was spectacular.”
Hagar does reveal that it was his realisation that it had been 20 years since the 2004 reunion tour that inspired him to pull together a band and embark on the forthcoming The Best Of All Worlds tour – which will celebrate the songs and legacy of Van Halen.
That project hasn’t been without its own band politics however, with Michael Anthony recently claiming that Hagar had approached former Metallica bassist Jason Newstead about being in the band before his former Van Halen bandmate had even spoken to him about it.
Elsewhere, the tour’s guitarist, Joe Satriani, has admitted that he’s worried that, “Eddie’s gonna come back and kill me!” because he’s modded an EVH Frankenstein guitar for the tour with a bunch of non-Van Halen-approved extras.
The tour however, will kick off the first of its 28 dates tomorrow in Palm Beach, Florida.
