Slash gets “super nervous” before every gig according to Velvet Revolver bandmate
He might be one of the best guitarists alive right now, but even Slash gets nervous before shows, according to one of his old Velvet Revolver bandmates.
Dave Kushner, who played rhythm guitar for the 2000s supergroup, tells Rob’s School of Music in an interview that he never gets stage fright himself, but that he can’t say the same for Slash. He says, “I remember Slash would get super nervous. Like, every time. And he would tell me, I’d be like, ‘Dude, you’re nervous?’ He’d be like, ‘Yeah, I’m fucking nervous. Aren’t you?’ And I’d be like, ‘Ah, not really.’”

Interestingly, Kushner does reveal that smaller, more intimate gigs can be more intimidating than bigger gigs. “When it’s the big stages, I get more in my head because you’re so far separated from the crowd that you feel more on display,” he explains.
“And I would get more self-conscious of how I was standing. I’d be like ‘Oh, wait, I can’t stand like this’ … I guess I had my versions of stage fright or being self-conscious. And yes, in the intimate situations, I get a little nervous.”
Elsewhere in the interview, Kushner has some advice to offer younger musicians, too. He says, laughing, “If you’re a younger player, you’re just worried about fucking up … Breathing helps, too. I know it sounds trite. I’ve tried playing golf, and I’m not great, and then I play poorly. And when I just take a second and breathe and think about entertaining people or whatever – that’s the most helpful thing I can think of.”
Meanwhile, Slash had been on his solo S.E.R.P.E.N.T tour recently, but has cancelled the remainder of the dates following the death of his stepdaughter Lucy-Bleu Knight, who passed away last week at the age of just 25.
He shared the sad news on Instagram in a statement in which he described his stepdaughter as “an incredibly talented artist, a passionate dreamer, and a charming, lovable, sweet soul.”
