Slayer’s Gary Holt thinks Beyonce is “the most overrated talent on Earth”, but “loves” Taylor Swift

When considering Slayer, most people might envision blood-smeared guitars and blazing infernos. But what if we told you that master shredder Gary Holt actually loves the odd sparkly, pop-girlie anthem?
Speaking on the Scandalous podcast, the Exodus and Slayer guitarist reveals that he regularly jams out to mainstream pop in the car. “I love pop!” he admits. “I listen to pop mostly in the car, I don’t listen to metal. There’s some heavy sh*t on [SiriusXM streaming]… but I’d rather listen to George Michael, myself.”

He takes a moment to direct some praise at the pop icon people love to hate – Taylor Swift. “I love Taylor Swift!” he insists. “Why all the hate? She’s an extraordinarily hard worker, she’s super fucking nice to everybody, and people hate her. She’s just the biggest pop star on Earth, and more power to her. I like the songs!”
In Holt’s eyes, Miss Swift deserves all the praise she’s receiving. But he’s less enthusiastic about the equally as high-profile Beyoncé.
“Beyoncé will put out a song and there’s 30 fucking people on it,” he mourns. “How can 30 people write a song, all gathered together? It’s just like a factory of songwriting! Who even knows who did what anymore, when there are like 20 names on it.”

“[Taylor is also] a good person on top of anything else,” he notes. “Not that I know her, but hey, she tipped off her truck drivers 100 grand… Beyoncé, what are you tipping your drivers? […] I think Beyoncé is the most overrated talent on Earth. I think she’s marginally talented.”
While he remains unimpressed by the Queen Bey, Holt has “no hate for Taylor,” noting how she at least writes and performs all her music herself. It’s a stance at odds with certain other musicians, notably Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl, who recently insinuated that Swift doesn’t perform her own music live.
“I’m not a Swiftie, but when I Knew You Were Trouble comes on the radio, I don’t change it,” Holt says. “I like it! I like pop music. Always have, even back in the Bonded by Blood era. I’d be out on tour with Venom, and I’d be drunk at the bar, singing every word to Madonna’s Angel. And Cronos was shaking his head, like, ‘What’s wrong with this guy!?’”
While Holt will continue to croon along to I Knew You Were Trouble in the car, that wont detract from his Slayer shredding this autumn.
Slayer will be performing this September and October. Tickets to Riot Fest, Louder Than Life and Aftershock are available now.
