Watch Alex Lifeson play a Christmas-themed cover of Black Sabbath’s War Pigs
Rush legend Alex Lifeson recently joined Barenaked Ladies onstage at this year’s annual Andy Kim Christmas show to perform some holiday-themed Black Sabbath classics.
With drummer Tyler Stewart donning the role of frontman, Lifeson blazed through War Pigs, with its lyrics substituted for those of Santa Claus is Coming to Town.

Strangely, War Pigs is actually somewhat of a Christmas tune. In 2010, Sabbath bassist Geezer Butler told Noisecreep that the track was was based on Walpurgis Night, which is “like Christmas for Satanists”.
After satisfying their Sabbath cravings, the Barenaked-Lifeson collaboration later descended into more festive chaos. Lifeson even riffed his way through the bounce of José Feliciano’s Feliz Navidad.
Lifeson also hopped onstage to perform with Broken Social Scene to cover organiser Andy Kim’s Sister OK, as well as the indie unit’s Anthems For A Seventeen Year‐Old Girl.
The man of the evening, Andy Kim himself, saw things out. With Lifeson on guitar, Kim rumbled through a cover of The Archies’ Sugar Sugar and The Ronettes’ Baby, I Love You. The grand finale had everyone out on stage, performing Kim’s Rock Me Gently.
Not every act had Lifeson’s help, of course. Rock band Billy Talent and new wave gang Men Without Hats also took to the stage throughout the night.
This year, the Andy Kim Christmas Show was raising funds for CAMH Gifts of Light. The charity helps provide patients at Toronto’s Center for Addiction and Mental Health with Christmas gifts.
