Watch: Get up-close with the PRS Silver Sky Maple Neck at NAMM 2020
NAMM 2020: PRS has updated its massively popular Silver Sky, John Mayer‘s signature guitar, for the new year. Tweaks include: a maple neck, new finishes and a special limited run Nebula model.
Rumours of the maple fretboard Silver Sky started circulating on the internet back in August 2019, when Mayer was spotted wielding the instrument on tour. Immediately, the guitar community began speculating that a new version of the six-string would be on the horizon. And now, at NAMM 2020, those rumours became reality.
A maple neck version of the Silver Sky in Midnight RoseBesides the fingerboard material, the Silver Sky now comes in two new colours: Midnight Rose and Polar Blue, which bring the finish options up to eight.
The Silver Sky in Polar BlueAdditionally, PRS has also unveiled a limited-edition version of the signature model: the Silver Sky Nebula. Limited to 500 pieces worldwide, the Nebula ships with an iridescent ‘flip-flop’ finish that changes its hue and tint depending to its angle. “The polychromatic finish accentuates the lines of the Silver Sky’s body and gives the guitar a dynamic look that is both delicate and powerful,” PRS said in a statement.
Mayer himself commented on the new versions of his guitar: “I’m so excited for this next step in the evolution of the Silver Sky. With new body colors, a maple neck variant, and a special limited-edition colorway, the spirit of this guitar feels stronger than ever.”
Other features of the Silver Sky remain unchanged. These include the 7.25-inch radius fretboard, 635JM neck shape, pickups and tonewoods.
In our review of the original PRS Silver Sky, we gave it a score of nine out of 10. We said: “More than simply a signature guitar, the Silver Sky is a successful marriage of the electric guitar’s past and present that can do the job on any stage.”
