“What does he know about performing?” Mike Shinoda’s daughter needed to be talked into taking guitar tips from him

Linkin Park‘s Mike Shinoda says despite him being in one of the biggest rock outfits of the last 30 years, his daughter doesn’t feel he’s qualified enough to teach her how to play guitar.
The 47-year-old, whose band recently returned from a seven-year hiatus with new vocalist Emily Armstrong, offers the anecdote on a new episode of The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. Shinoda explains that his daughter, one of his three children, has started learning to play guitar. “I was like, ‘Hey, by the way, that one chord at the end of this part, actually your fingers go here,’” he remembers [via Guitar World]. “And she’s like, ‘Yeah, whatever’ – basically: ‘Leave me alone.’”

Shinoda continues: “So I backed away like, ‘Okay, cool, I’m sure you’ve got it.’ A little while later, I wanna say it was the next day, she came to me and was like, ‘Hey Dad, can you show me that chord?’”
Her change of heart was later explained by Shinoda’s wife. “I heard you two talking originally and she was like, ‘Get out here, don’t tell me how to play,’” the musician quotes his wife as saying. When his wife spoke to his daughter about it, his daughter asked her, “What does he know about performing?”
As it turns out, quite a bit. Shinoda’s wife pulled out a video of Linkin Park at the Rock in Rio festival, performing to 85,000 people, to convince their daughter of his musical credentials. But even then, it took time to set in, as she asked, “Who’s that?”

Shinoda co-founded Linkin Park in 1996, with the band originally called “Xero”. They released their debut album, Hybrid Theory, under their current name in 2000 and instantly became chart sensations. The band entered a hiatus in late 2017, however, after the suicide of longtime frontman Chester Bennington aged 41.
Linkin Park reunited earlier this month, with Emily Armstrong filling the Bennington’s lead vocalist role, while co-founding drummer Rob Bourdon is replaced by Colin Brittain. The band announced their return with a livestream of a secret Los Angeles concert on 5 September, as well as news of an eighth studio album, From Zero, coming out on 15 November. They also released their first newly recorded song in seven years, The Emptiness Machine, and announced a six-date world tour from September through to November.

Linkin Park’s return hasn’t been without controversy. Shortly after she was announced as joining the band, Armstrong was accused of having ties to the Church of Scientology and supporting actor Danny Masterson during a trial where he was found guilty of raping two Jane Does. Armstrong responded in her Instagram stories, expressing regret over her past support of Masterson. She did not say whether she is or has ever been a Scientologist.
