Zakk Wylde is now the second guitarist to say guitar gear is like Italian food – are they onto something?

Zakk Wylde feels there’s no such thing as bad gear, and that actually, it’s just like Italian food – all of it comes together as part of a recipe.
The guitarist, who currently tours with Pantera, feels pedals in particular can be a great source of inspiration for players, and has reflected on how his early love for them began with trying to sound like his favourite artists. And funnily enough, Wylde isn’t the first guitarist to liken gear to Italian cuisine either – Richie Kotzen made a similar comparison last year.

Wylde tells Andertons [via Ultimate Guitar]: “That’s the beauty of learning. When you’re a kid, and [you hear] Eddie Van Halen doing Eruption. It’s like, ‘What is that on his guitar?’ And then it’s like, ‘Oh, that’s a Phase 90.’ [Then], when you’re playing and you step on the pedal, you go, ‘Oh my God, it sounds like the record!’ So, I think that for all of us, that’s where that aspect of it comes in, where you love trying to emulate your favourite players, all your guitar heroes.”
He continues, “The pedals are just awesome, in regards to just inspiring you for different songwriting [approaches]. If you step on a different pedal, it inspires you to write a song around it, that’s great. Same thing with amps.
“Whether it’s the old Laneys, the Oranges are great… I mean, every amp in here is awesome. The Friedmans, the Fenders… It’s just like with Italian food. There’s no bad. It’s all good, you know what I mean? You’ve got the pesto, you got the tomato sauce… It’s all good.”

As for Kotzen, his likening of gear to a good Italian meal comes down to the fact that your rig doesn’t have to be overly complicated. He told Total Guitar, “There’s nothing like plugging into a great amp without anything in front. It’s like Italian food – it doesn’t have to be complicated, and uses great ingredients. If you’re looking for a great rhythm sound, keep it simple.”
