Alec Jon Such – 4th June 2022
Music Instrument News is sad to report the death of bassist Alec Jon Such, one of the founding members of New Jersey rock legends Bon Jovi.
Such was a well-known figure on the New Jersey music scene in the early 1980’s. He worked as a time as a ballroom manager, and booked Jon Bon Jovi And The Wild Ones to play at the venue. Such invited his friend and band mate Richie Sambora to watch the band perform. With Bon Jovi’s childhood friend David Bryan on keyboards, and Such’s own childhood friend Tico Torres on drums, Bon Jovi was formed.
Such remained with Bon Jovi for eleven years, from 1983 to 1994, through the peak of the band’s success, playing on such hits as You Give Love A Bad Name and Livin’ On A Prayer.
No formal reason was given at the time for Such’s departure from Bon Jovi, but he later confirmed in an interview, that it was down to the age gap between himself and the rest of the band. Such confirmed that the record company had lied about his age, and advised that his sister was older than him, when in fact she was younger.
Such also said in the interview that he was finding the pace of recording and touring with Bon Jovi increasingly hard to manage, stating that it had started to ‘feel like work’. Such said that he had joined a band because he did not want to work, so the feeling of work he was getting from being in Bon Jovi was no longer something he wished to continue.
Such briefly re-joined Bon Jovi in 2018 when the band was inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame, and he remained in contact with his friends from the band until his untimely death.
During his time with Bon Jovi, Alec Jon Such played a variety of bass guitars. They included a distinctive Guild Flying Star SB608, an Ampeg Dan Armstrong Lucite Bass, and a distinctive Aria Pro II WL Custom bass which he used when Bon Jovi toured their first album.
Following his departure from Bon Jovi, Such was involved in some production work, but he kept a low profile, and was largely forgotten by the mainstream and music media.
On the night of his death, Alec Jon Such was at home, but after getting up the night, he required assistance back to bed from a friend who was staying at his house. Such was found dead the next morning.
No official cause of death has been advised for Alec Jon Such at this time, but early indications are that he died of natural causes.
