BMAT reveal the state of TV music usage across the UK
A recent BMAT study for International Production Music Group dives into a variety of in-show music usage trends and compares the use of commercial, commissioned and production music across the UK.
BMAT and IPMG found out exactly how different types of music were used on TV in September – October 2021. Their findings are now in a public report which gives an insight into the quantity of music and the type of music being used on TV across the UK.
To identify the types of music that get the most screen time, data was analysed through Reportal, BMAT’s TV and radio music reporting tool. The sample included data from 6 high-rating TV channels from the UK, including BBC One, BBC Two, Channel 4, Discovery Channel UK, Dave and ITV from 18 September to 18 October 2021.
“We did this report for IPMG with the joint intention of quantifying the airtime on TV that production music is played compared to other types such as commercial and commissioned music. In the UK, the numbers show production music is played around 40% that there’s music detected. This shows the important value it adds to the TV productions. We hope this information will help the libraries, publishers and associations in their task of promoting the value of this type of music.”
Luis Ruano, Production Music Service Lead at BMAT
It seems across all these channels in the UK, there’s a general trend of the use of production music overtaking that of commercial music. Other key findings from the report include –
- Music is used in 42% of the total in-show airing time on TVs across the UK.
- Production music is used 6x more than commercial music on TVs across the UK.
- We identified production music in 37% of the total airing time.
- Out of all identified music types, commercial music only adds up to 6%.
- Ads and promos make up 8% of the total airing time.
